This opportunity is with the County of Lambton's Community Partner, Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership.

This position is being offered through the Ontario Government's Employment Insurance (EI) program and it's Job Creation Partnership program.
There are specific requirements under the EI program in order to be eligible for this position.
EI Eligibility Requirements:
• Have a current claim for employment insurance benefits; or
• Have a previous claim whose benefit period ended in the preceding 36
months; or
• Have a previous benefit period that began in the preceding 60 months,
during which the individual was paid maternity or parental benefits, after
which they left the labour market to care for a newborn or newly adopted
child and are now seeking to re-enter the labour market.

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership is a one-stop shop for economic development services whose mission is to promote the distinctive advantages that Sarnia-Lambton has to offer to companies and residents. By coordinating community-based economic development initiatives and working to maintain a commercially attractive environment, we foster new business creation as well as help ensure that established firms remain and grow here in our region.

Position Overview

Wage: To be determined based on EI eligibility.

This project is focused on researching and developing alumni networks in Sarnia-Lambton for graduates from various Ontario Universities as potential means to provide professional development and networking opportunities. In doing so, the presence of these alumni networks will help fill unfilled positions, help with newcomer integration, reduce out-migration of youth, develop mentors and identify community champions. It is a proactive approach to overcoming some of the challenges of demographic changes.

With a focus on research and innovation, Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership has recognized a need for alumni networking to assist with resident attraction, employee and youth retention. Alumni networks would also be an opportunity to encourage collaboration and foster innovation which helps to bring jobs to the region and keep jobs here in the future. A significant number of the University Graduates in Sarnia-Lambton are Alumni may be from major Universities within a 4-hour drive such as University of Windsor, University of Waterloo and Western University, McMaster University and Brock University, University of Toronto, Ryerson University. However, other smaller Alumni populations are working in Sarnia-Lambton from educational institutions across the globe.

To implement these networks, research is required to determine the needs of the alumni populations before a tailored program can be implemented. In addition to research focused on the three main Alumni populations, research is needed to identify other alumni populations that may exist in the local economy.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct secondary research on successful Alumni networks – contact alumni offices
• Participate in meetings with potential consultants / meet community partners / visit alumni networks
• Develop questions and research objectives
• Review and refine questions and objectives with community partners and consultants
• Research channels for conducting primary research
• Contact local companies to discuss project and let them know about upcoming surveys
• Conduct primary research through one-on-one meetings and asking for introductions to other alumni
• Analyze research
• Prepare report and meet with community partners to review primary research
• Build a strategy from results of research - recognizing the potential for different approaches based on the needs of alumni from each school.
• Communicate results to participants and stakeholders
• Plan event(s) for alumni networks and develop personalized survey for participants
• Host events, write summary of event, conduct follow up surveys with attendees
• Plan follow up event
• Prepare final project summary report

Eligible Participants
To be eligible for Ontario JCP, individuals must meet the EI Act’s definition of an
“insured participant”. When they apply for assistance, they must be unemployed
and legally authorized to work in Canada (Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
and either:
• Have a current claim for employment insurance benefits; or
• Have a previous claim whose benefit period ended in the preceding 36
months; or
• Have a previous benefit period that began in the preceding 60 months,
during which the individual was paid maternity or parental benefits, after
which they left the labour market to care for a newborn or newly adopted
child and are now seeking to re-enter the labour market.
